Delivering on our eco promises
While we're very proud of our environmental credentials – Snowhill is a BREEAM excellent rated building and we are externally accredited to ISO14001 standard, which basically means that we are committed to monitoring our environmental impact, and reducing it where possible - we appreciate that there's more we need to do – as a firm and as individuals.
So say hello to two of our Eco Champions: Rory Jones and Joshua Fletcher-Flood, two trainee lawyers. A big area of focus for them, for everyone in the firm, is to find new ways to further reduce our UK carbon footprint (we've already managed to cut our paper consumption by 36% since we started measuring how much we used five years ago).
We caught up with Rory and Joshua and asked them to tell us a bit about what it means to be an Eco Champion.
Rory explains, "I took on the role in 2013, as I felt it was a great opportunity to make a positive contribution to the firm (beyond fee earning). It's also a great way to meet people across all three of our UK offices.
"The main task I've been involved with to date was the environmental audit for the Waterhouse Square office. This involved quizzing members of staff about their awareness of the firm's environmental policy and taking note of what they felt could be done to improve our recycling efforts."
Joshua adds, "Like Rory, I was also involved in the internal audit at Waterhouse Square. My role was to question Lorna, our Head of CR, in relation to the firm's management review of its environmental policy, procedures and performance for maintaining ISO14001 accreditation."
"Following my audit of the management review, I had the opportunity to witness new steps being put in place to improve the firm's management of remedial or preventive action plans. Basically, it's an opportunity to hold the firm to account!"
Rory's summed it up brilliantly. Our Eco Champions are like our very own environment watchdog, making sure that we deliver on our promises.
