Meet Matt Gooden, Trainee
I was attracted to Gowling WLG over other law firms because of the ethos and heritage of the legacy firms. I'm about to complete my first year as a trainee, having undertaken seats in Real Estate and Private Capital. Real Estate was heavily transactional and incredibly fast paced – the whole department never seemed to stop! I really enjoyed those six months because I was given a lot of responsibility and client exposure, regularly speaking to four or five clients a day.
I'm about to complete my second seat, in Private Capital, which has proved incredibly different. The team works for high net-worth individuals, predominantly on their tax affairs and trust structures. The seat is more advisory in nature, so there is more time to think and reflect on fulfilling the client's aims.
My time at Gowling WLG has been hugely rewarding so far, and I can only imagine it will get better. I have been particularly impressed with every fee earner's level of commitment and dedication to pleasing the client. There is definitely a one team ethos throughout the firm as we work incredibly closely together at all levels, which helps make it a really vibrant and positive atmosphere to be in.
My advice to anyone applying is to get beneath the skin of the firm and show you've properly researched it in your answers. It is also worth remembering; the application and subsequent processes are just as much about whether the place is right for you, as whether you're a right fit for the firm.
